The weapon has been sent for a forensic examination to establish if it was indeed used in the murder of Dabholkar. CBI, in August 2019, informed a Pune court that it needed to scour the sea at Kharegaon Creek near Thane to look for the weapon.

Dabholkar was shot dead on August 20, 2013, at about 7.20 am by two unidentified persons aged about 25 to 30 years when he was on his morning walk on the footpath of Omkareshwar Bridge behind Balgandharva Rangmandir in Pune.
Public prosecutor Sunil Gonsalves said the group to which the accused belonged was also involved in the murders of Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare, Gauri Lankesh and MM Kalburgi.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sanjeev Punalekar, advocate and legal advisor of right-wing group Sanatan Sanstha, and his associate Vikram Bhave in connection with the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar.
