2004 tsunami: 17 years on, a look back at one of the deadliest disasters ever

Triggered by the undersea earthquake activity offshore, the 100-feet-high tsunami waves laid bare complete annihilation in as many as 14 countries, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

Magnitude 7.6 earthquake hits Indonesia, tsunami warning issued

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, on the other hand, estimated the magnitude at 7.7, placing the earthquake at a depth of 5km.

On World Tsunami Awareness Day 2021, UN calls for increased understanding

While the UN said that tsunamis were rare events, it also noted that in the past 100 years, as many as 58 instances of the natural disaster were observed that had claimed the lives of 260,000 people, or 4,600 deaths per disaster.

Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions and extraterrestrial collisions were among the top reasons listed by the UN that could cause a tsunami. Mighty earthquake hits Pacific town of Acapulco, Mexico City feels the tremors

Mexico earthquake: President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said via Twitter that authorities in the four states that most felt the earthquake told him there were no victims or serious damage beyond some collapsed walls and falling rocks.

Tsunami alert after 6.8-magnitude quake off Vanuatu

Hazardous tsunami waves were possible for coasts within 300 kilometres of the epicentre, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said in a preliminary assessment.

Tsunami confirmed after 7.7-magnitude quake in South Pacific

"Tsunami confirmed," the Australian Bureau of Meteorology said in a tweet, as it warned of a threat to Lord Howe Island, which is about 550 kilometres (340 miles) east of Australia's mainland.

6.3-magnitude earthquake hits northeastern Japan, no tsunami threat

The quake jolted large areas in the region at 7:23 pm (1023 GMT) with its epicentre located 54 kilometres (34 miles) east of Namie, eastern Fukushima, according to the US Geological Survey said.

India not under tsunami threat due to Indonesia quake, says MoES official

Advisory has been issued that there is no tsunami threat to due to the earthquake in Indonesia by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

Strong 6.3-magnitude quake hits southern Japan, no tsunami threat

The quake struck at 8:48 am (2348 GMT Thursday) in Pacific waters nearly 40 kilometres (25 miles) east-southeast of Miyazaki city at a depth of 24 km, according to the agency.
