Instagram has updated its famous text logo for the first time in ten years, but the internet isn’t happy about it. In a post, the head of the social media platform, Adam Mosseri, unveiled the new wordmark font.

“The wordmark at the top of the app hasn’t changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri wrote. He added, “Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that’s always made it Instagram.”

He concluded his post with a picture showing Instagram written in black on a white background.

What changed?

The pink-and-orange gradient square on the home screen remains untouched. However, the word “Instagram” above the logo has changed. Though small, it is a visible redesign.

The wordmark’s font is redesigned with cursive curves. The new design adds old-fashioned curves to certain letters, including “s,” “g,” and “r”.

Social media has a lot to say:

Though the initial reactions to his Instagram post were positive, people soon began to question the reason for the change. Some took to X to share their opinions, deciding that the new wordmark isn’t appealing. A few even called it “AI slop”.

An individual wrote, “Good grief, man. These decision-makers at Meta must have absolutely no regard for quality work. The new Instagram logo is funky in the worst way possible. It's leaning both into the classic script and also trying to drop in a standard ‘a’ and ‘m’ sans serif. Also, the ‘I’ is a totally different weight.”

A third commented, “No, absolutely not 😡”. This sentiment was echoed by many, especially on X.

A fourth commented:

Some joked that the new wordmark reads “Instagzam” because of the shape of the “r” in the font.

When was the last time Instagram changed its design?

The last time Instagram updated its design was in 2016. During that time, the company moved away from its classic brown camera with the rainbow stripe logo. In its place, the colourful, iconic gradient logo was introduced.
