He started with television, as the director of Miit (2003), a TV series based on Rabindranath Tagore’s novel, Noukadubi, and continued his association with the medium by judging and hosting a couple of reality shows. "This is not the first time Chokher Bali is being adapted on screen, but he feels that it’s one of the best Tagore creations, so he still chose to work on it," says a source, adding that actor Radhika Apte will play the lead role in the show.

Basu, who is currently shooting his next with Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, had long gaps between the schedules, so he decided to work on the show during that time. "He shot the series early this year, and completed the post production work soon after, so that he doesn’t have to shuttle between his film shoot and television show," says the source.
