I wanted to ditch the loud, heavy make-up characters: Sayantani Ghosh

TV actor Sayantani Ghosh feels people are used to defining types, and perceive actors in a certain way.

Unlike most female TV actors who are happy being part of never-ending dramas, Sayantani Ghosh needed to do something different to up her game. “You always look for different genres. When you try something different, it’s a challenge, because you don’t know whether you’ll be accepted or not.”

Actor Sayantani Ghosh admits she is consciously trying to break away from the image people have formed about her.

Currently, Sayantani is part of a web series where her character is rather subtle and demure unlike her previous roles. “For the last couple of years, I was doing mostly costume dramas and playing characters that are loud and required lot of makeup and glamour. So the audience and the industry formed a certain opinion of me,” says the actor, who’s been part of shows such as Naagin and Santoshi Maa.

“The moment they thought of Sayantani, they had this image of a glamorous girl. It happens a lot on Indian television. They can’t see you doing anything else.”

The 31-year-old says she constantly tries to break away from this image. “The audience could never imagine me playing such a simple girl next door – generous, kind and positive. So my intention was to bust that opinion.”

On whether TV shows are still regressive, Sayantani says, “Fortunately and unfortunately, TV still does the kind of projects where you’re meant to look good in every scene. There’s a certain texture and everyone has makeup, good costumes and jewellery – whether it’s a mythological show or not.”
