US Election 2020: Donald Trump inches ahead of Joe Biden in Pennsylvania

After an unprecedented campaign amid a resurgent pandemic, polls have finally started to close in the United States. Donald Trump and Joe Biden are splitting the traditional strongholds in early results. Northern Battleground states, which may hold the key to the White House are up for grabs.
Trump has won Florida, Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Trump is also leading in battleground Pennsylvania, news agency Associated Press showed. After 64% of vote counting, Trump has 54.5% electoral vote count as opposed to Biden who is at 44.4%.
Meanwhile, Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden took to Twitter and said that the party won’t rest until everyone’s vote is counted. A video shared on Twitter showed his campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillion and campaign adviser Bob Bauer giving an update on where the party stands. An important point made during the update was that if counting stopped now, Biden would be elected President straightaway.

- Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign said on Wednesday it has legal teams standing by if US President Donald Trump follows through with his threat to go to court to try to stop the counting of votes.
Joe Biden’s campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon issued a strongly worded statement following President Trump’s White House speech, calling it “outrageous, unprecedented, and incorrect.”
“The president’s statement tonight about trying to shut down the counting of duly cast ballots was outrageous, unprecedented, and incorrect. It was outrageous because it is a naked effort to take away the democratic rights of American citizens,” she said in the statement.
- The election is far from over with millions of votes outstanding in key states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan which are also called the Midwest. Counting is underway in Arizona and Georgia but Joe Biden has announced victory in Arizona, a state which Trump won in 2016. Georgia appears to be a at a standstill.
- Over 1 million mail ballots yet to be counted in Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf tweets there are over 1 million mail ballots left to be counted in the state. “I promised Pennsylvanians that we would count every vote and that’s what we’re going to do. Let’s be clear: This is a partisan attack on Pennsylvania’s elections, our votes, and democracy. Our counties are working tirelessly to process votes as quickly AND as accurately as possible. Pennsylvania will have a fair election and we will count every vote.” Pennsylvania had been one of the eleven states to vote twice for Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996 which Hillary Clinton lost in 2016. Its 20 electoral votes are very crucial for the presidential race.
- ‘We won’, declares Trump, vows to move Supreme Court to stop counting. President Donald Trump sought to declare victory even as millions of votes remained to be counted in key battleground states, saying in a speech from the White House on Wednesday he would be going to the Supreme Court to ask for “all voting to stop”, alleging fraud. - Britain-based Smarkets exchange is giving Trump 55% odds of winning, up from 39% when polls opened. Meanwhile bettors on, Betfair, another British betting exchange, gave him 75% chance of winning a second term. Read more
- Joe Biden wins Maine with 324,170 votes, reports NYT. Biden won the statewide tally and the 1st Congressional District, good for three electoral votes. Trump, meanwhile, hoped to claim one electoral vote in a win in the 2nd Congressional District. The 2nd Congressional District hasn’t yet been called. Hillary Clinton won the state by just 2.9% over Donald Trump. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the state by just 2.9% over Donald Trump.
- Biden becomes second Democrat since 1948 to win Arizona
Fox News and the Associated Press projected that Democrat Joe Biden has won in the southwestern US state of Arizona, a traditionally Republican stronghold which was captured by President Donald Trump in 2016. The call for Biden in Arizona, which has 11 electoral votes, came after a speech from Trump, who claimed victory in the election despite several key states not yet being called.
- Trump said he will go to Supreme Court to dispute election count. “They knew they couldn’t win, so they said, let’s go to court. We were getting to win this election. Frankly, we did win. Our goal is to ensure the integrity for the good of the country. We want the law to be used in a proper manner. So, we will be going to US Supreme Court,” he said, adding that it is “a fraud on the American public, an embarrassment”.
- Donald Trump said that his party had already won the election and accused the Biden campaign of election fraud. “As far as I am concerned, we have already won the election,” Trump told supporters.
- “We were winning everything, and counting was called off,” says Donald Trump in midnight message to supporters on election day.
- “Results tonight have been phenomenal; we’re getting ready for a big celebration,” Trump said.
- President Trump is expected to speak soon from the East Room in the White House. He tweeted earlier that he would be speaking.
- No clear winner yet as Trump, Biden locked in swing state contests but President Donald Trump did not lose in a landslide as some pundits had forecast, and Biden did not close the contest early as some others had said he might. Read more
- Trump has is the projected winner in Nebraska, according to Fox News. However, Joe Biden has picked up one of its five electoral college votes. Nebraska has one electoral vote.
- Trump wins Montana (3 electoral votes). Montana has been a Republican stronghold and was won by Trump in 2016 as well. Republican Steve Daines wins re-election to US Senate from Montana.

- Republican Donald Trump is slowly catching up to Democrat nominee Joe Biden who is in the lead according to leading media outlets as Fox, CNN and the New York Times. As per Fox News, Biden has 237 of the 538 electoral college seats, while Trump has 210. On the other hand, CNN has projected 215 electoral college votes to Biden and 171 to Trump. The New York Times reported that Biden has 213 electoral college votes and Trump 174. The winner of the elections needs at least 270 electoral college votes.

- News agency AP has called Florida for Donald Trump. “President Donald Trump has won Florida and its 29 electoral votes, the biggest prize among the perennial battlegrounds and a state crucial to his reelection hopes...” AP said. Florida is a key battleground state in the election and winning it would mean reelection is within Trump’s grasp.
- Pramila Jayapal wins Congressional seat for third consecutive term
The Chennai-born Jayapal emerged victorious over Republican Craig Keller by a massive 70 percentage points in the Seventh Congressional District of Washington State.
- President Trump tweeted that he will be making a statement tonight.
Earlier, in another tweet, the incumbent President accused the Democrats of “stealing” the election. “We are up BIG, but they are trying to STEAL the Election. We will never let them do it. Votes cannot be cast after the Polls are closed!” he tweeted. Twitter has flagged the tweet for the accusation made in it.
- Twitter Inc and Facebook Inc also suspended several recently created right-leaning news accounts posting information about voting in the hotly contested US election for violating their policies. Read more.

With cars honking in a drive-in rally, Joe Biden addressed his supporters. “Your patience is commendable. We knew this would go long, but who knew it would go till tomorrow morning, or even longer. We feel good about where we are, we really do,” says Biden. “We are on track to win this election.”

- Democrat Joe Biden is set to make a statement shortly, AFP reported. As several swing state still to be decided, he is not likely to concede defeat or declare victory.
- The Associated Press has projected Joe Biden as the winner of Minnesota. Minnesota has 10 electoral college seats and was won by Hillary Clinton in 2016 which was the eleventh consecutive Democratic presidential win in the state. The state has not voted for a Republican since Richard Nixon in 1972.
- Democrat Deborah Ross won an open House seat in North Carolina. The seat is currently held by Republican Rep. George Holding, who announced his retirement last year.
- Rapper Kanye West voted for himself as the next US President. “Voting for the first time in my life for the President of the United States, and it’s for someone I truly trust ... me,” he tweeted.
- Democrat Sarah McBride has won a State Senate race in Delaware, and would become the first openly transgender State senator in the country when sworn in.
Mcbride expressed her happiness on Twitter.
- Progressive Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, who are popularly known as “The Squad” have secured a second term in Congress.
The four women were elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, and are admired on the Left. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has won the election from New York, Ilhan Omar from Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley from Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib from Michigan. President Trump has often targeted the “ Squad” in his rallies and on twitter.
“Our sisterhood is resilient,” Omar tweeted alongside pictures of all four women as she celebrated her victory.
- President Trump has won Ohio, according to AFP. There are 18 electoral votes at stake in Ohio. Trump carried the state in 2016 as well. Meanwhile, Joe Biden is projected to win Hawaii.
- CNN Projects Biden’s win in Virginia. The state has 13 electoral votes at stake in Virginia and was won by Hillary Clinton in 2016.
- Jason Miller senior advisor to Trump campaign and 2016 Senior Communications Advisor tweeted against Fox News’ calling of Arizona for Joe Biden.
- California with 55 electoral votes goes to Joe Biden, as per AP projections. This win was expected as California traditionally votes strongly in favour of Democrats in presidential polls. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the state with 61.73 percent of the vote and a 30.11 percent margin, both the highest since Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 66.95 percent vote share and 35.25 percent margin in 1936.
- Fox News has called Arizona for Joe Biden. “The Fox News Decision Desk can now project that former Vice President Joe Biden will win the state of Arizona, dramatically narrowing the president’s pathway to reelection...”
But it remains to be seen whether the Republican stronghold turns blue. With a growing Latino population and an influx of voters from more liberal, Democrats have focused on turning the state more and more. Trump carried the state by over 3 percentage points in 2016.
- CNN has projected Oregon win for Biden. The state has 7 electoral college votes. In 2016, Hillary Clinton carried the state.
- Fox News has called Florida for Donald Trump becoming the first to project a winner in the swing state. “We have a major race call to announce: The Fox News Decision Desk can now project that President Trump will win the state of Florida and its hefty prize of 29 electoral votes, keeping his reelection hopes alive. This is significant because a Biden win in the Sunshine State would have all but doomed the president’s quest for a second term.” With 29 electoral college votes,Florida is the largest swing state in America and has always been so. The margin of victory in the state has been very low and Trump won in this state in 2016 with 49% of the total votes as opposed to Clinton’s 47.8%; only by 1.2 percentage points.
- Joe Biden wins Washington: AP Projections. Washington was won by Hillary Clinton in 2016 with 54.3% vote over Donald Trump’s 38.07%. The state has 12 electoral votes. Democrat Jay Inslee wins reelection for governor in Washington.
- Trump quite expectedly wins Idaho. The state has 4 electoral votes and has been voting Republicans in US presidential polls since 1968. Republican incumbent Jim Risch defeats Democratic challenger Jordan in race for US senate seat in Idaho.
- Democrat Roy Cooper wins reelection for governor in North Carolina.
- Indian-origin congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi re-elected for US House from Illinois Krishnamoorthi, 47, who was born in New Delhi, easily defeated Preston Nelson of the Libertarian Party. When last reports came in, he had accounted for nearly 71 per cent of the total votes counted. Read more
- Trump wins Utah which adds 6 electoral votes to his tally. Utah was won by Donald Trump in 2016 as well with 45.5 percent of the vote, the lowest percentage for any Republican since George H. W. Bush in 1992.
Trump wins in Missouri. The state was widely expected to vote for President Trump as it did in the 2016 presidential election. MIssouri carries 10 electoral votes.
- Biden bags New Hampshire with 53.7% votes. Hillary Clinton had also win the state with a 0.4% margin, the second closest percentage behind Michigan in the 2016 presidential elections. The state has 4 electoral college votes.
- US Senator Lindsey Graham, an ally of President Donald Trump, has defeated Democrat Jaime Harrison, according to Fox News and The New York Times which called the race with nearly half the precincts reporting. Lindsey Graham was also a close friend of Late US Senator John McCain.

- Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene has won Georgia’s open 14th Congressional District, reported Bloomberg. She has been a very divisive figure and has even expressed support her for the QAnon conspiracy theory. Even though she has been criticised for racist comments, President Donald Trump called her a “future Republican star.” Read more
- Biden wins in New Mexico, which has five electoral votes.
Once a swing state, New Mexico has leaned heavily towards the Democrats in recent races. Hillary Clinton won the state in 2016, aided by increasing support from Latino voters.
- Trump bags Kansas’ 6 electoral votes.
This was not a surprise as the state has been voting for Republicans for years. In 2016, Trump had taken this Republican stronghold with 56% votes.
- Donald Trump Jr, the US president’s son, tweeted a world map as a mock electoral map showing India, with wrong boundaries, painted in blue, the colour associated with Democrats, and much of the rest of the world in Republican red. “Okay, finally got around to making my electoral map prediction,” he tweeted on Tuesday. - Polls have closed in Iowa (6 electoral votes), Montana (3); Nevada (6) and Utah (6).

There’s a really close fight underway for Texas, with both Trump and Biden securing 49 per cent of the vote. Trump appears to be just a little ahead of Biden in the key battleground state. The state has 38 electoral votes.

- Joe Biden has won Colorado, which has nine electoral votes. In 2016, Hillary Clinton carried the state of Colorado. He also won the District of Columbia, which has 3 electoral votes. The win was expected as DC has never elected a Republican candidate.
- Even as Trump campaign claimed Florida, the US media said the competition was too close to call.
- Donald Trump has taken Nebraska, Louisiana, Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota. Joe Biden, meanwhile, has won New Mexico, in latest projections put out by AP.
- CNN Projects a Trump win South Dakota. There are three electoral votes at stake in South Dakota. In 2016, Trump had carried the state
- Biden projected to win New York . Trump who calls himself a lifelong New Yorker lost to Hillary Clinton in 2016 as well.
- US Senate Republican leader McConnell wins reelection
US Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky won reelection ensuring that the most powerful Republican in Congress will remain in the chamber for another six years, reported AFP.
- Trump retains Alabama. In 2016 as well, Donald Trump won the election in Alabama with 62.08% of the vote.
- Trump retains Mississippi. Mississippi has not voted Democratic since 1976 and so Trump was widely expected to win the state. Trump won the election in 2016 in Mississippi with 57.86% of the vote.
- Trump retains Arkansas. In 2016 as well Trump won the state with 60.57% of the vote even though Bill Clinton had been the Governor of Arkansas for 12 years.
- Biden wins in Illinois and Rhode Island, reported AFP based on US media projections.
- According to the news agency AP, voter turnout for the 2020 presidential election was massive. However, it didn’t come close to the record that was set in 1876, when 81.8 percent of eligible voters went to the polls.
