about the video

One month after the tragic air disaster that cost the lives of almost the entire team, Chapecoense returned to action on Tuesday (3rd January) with a match against Nova Iguacu in the Copa Sao Paulo under-20 tournament in Brazil. They were beaten 2-0. Players, officials and supporters held an impeccably observed silence in Porto Feliz on Tuesday as Brazilian football team Chapecoense, who lost almost their entire playing and backroom staff in a plane crash in Colombia on November 28th, took to the field for the first time since the disaster. They were playing in the Copa Sao Paulo, a popular under-20 tournament in Brazil. Nova Iguacu, from Rio, were the opponents. Although Chapecoense made a bright start, they could not break Nova Iguacu down and two goals in the second half from their striker Nathan sealed victory for the visitors. Chapecoense are trying to rebuild their squad and although there is no shortage of players wanting to become part of the team, quality is the issue if Chapecoense want to compete again in the Brasileirao and also live up to their international commitments. Chapecoense were on their way to Colombia to take on Atletico Nacional in the final of the 2016 Copa Sudamericana when the air crash took place. As a result they were declared Copa Sudamericana champions at the request of Atletico. (Video courtesy: SNTV)
