Germany’s Merz New Year message: Europe cannot stand by ‘assert ourselves or face Russian threat...'

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Europe to assert its interests more forcefully to safeguard peace and prosperity in 2026, warning that Russia’s war in Ukraine poses a direct threat to the entire continent. He stressed the need for unity and resilience, highlighting Germany’s increased defence spending and strong support for Ukraine as signs that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security and future.
