The government took a 'progressive' step on Wednesday when it cleared a bill to raise the time limit for medical termination of pregnancy. The Union Cabinet approved the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Abortion) Bill, 2020 which increases the time limit for abortion to the 24th week of pregnancy, as compared to 20 weeks in the original legislation, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. The government said that it hoped that the international community would appreciate the move to give greater reproductive rights to women.
