Just days after Indian regulators cleared the Covaxin and Covishield vaccines for emergency use in the country, the chiefs of two top vaccine-makers engaged in a spat. Krishna Ella, chairman and MD of Bharat Biotech, and Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, exchanged veiled barbs over issues like vaccine efficacy, safety, and the risks their respective companies took. Eventually, the two buried the hatchet, releasing a joint statement affirming their commitment to smooth rollout of vaccines in India. Bharat Biotech has developed Covaxin - India's first indigenous Covid-19 vaccine - while SII is manufacturing Covishield, the vaccine developed by Oxford University and pharma major AstraZeneca.
