A pre-Mauryan period lion head made of stone has been discovered from the dry bed of the river Ganga which archaeologists claim is the earliest Mauryan sculpture discovered so far. The stone lion was accidentally discovered when a mechanic from the Archaeological Survey of India accidentally spotted it near the bank of the river.
