Geelani calls for shutdown in Kashmir over youth killing

Kashmiri separatist hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani called for shutdown in Srinagar on Monday. All shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices were closed and public transport is off the roads. The shutdown was called to protest the demise of 26-year-old Mohammad Rafiq Bangro, who was in a critical condition after being injured in an altercation with paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. According to the Hurriyat Conference, the shutdown is to impress upon the international community to take serious note of the “human rights abuses by forces in Kashmir.”
