HCs, apex court don't need OK from state for CBI probe: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that High courts in the country can order a CBI inquiry into a crime committed within the territory of a state without the consent of the state government concerned. A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan in a unanimous judgment said such powers have to be exercised cautiously by the apex court and the High Courts. Congress party welcomed the decision saying that it would be beneficial in the public interest.
