After the Calcutta high court struck down the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has now announced a hike in the monthly allowance to the unwilling farmers of Singur who have not yet got their land returned. In the latest court ruling that came as a setback for the West Bengal state government and a triumph for the Tata Motors Company, the high court struck down the Act as unconstitutional. Meanwhile commenting on the current economic slump in the country, regional Trinamool Congress leader, Firhad Hakim said that several measures other than the austerity drive by the central government are necessary to tackle the crisis.
