Suspected Maoists killed village council head and his subordinate in West Medinipur district of West Bengal on Monday. Residents of Sirsi village in Jhargram subdivision of the district found bodies of Soumen Bhakat, headman of Kendradangri village and his assistant Kamal Mahato Sirsi around 5 kilometres from Kendradangri. Bhakat was an independent candidate elected as head for the post of village council. The Maoists, described by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the country's biggest internal security threat, say they are crusading against the prevailing political system, upholding the cause of the poor and marginal farmers and landless labourers.
