Tried And Tasted: The Old Kheer Shop

The Siddiquis have been living in Sirkiwalan in Hauz Qazi in Old Delhi for generations. The family originally reared cattle and sold buffalo milk to make a living. They would boil the leftover milk to preserve it – but discovered that it turned into a delicious kheer when left to simmer over low heat for long hours. The family and neighbours loved it so much that the Siddiquis decided to sell their kheer – and they have been doing so since the late 1880s. A plate of kheer now costs Rs 30.
