Merz gets humiliated, reality check for Zelensky after Bundestag slams brakes on Russia asset plan

German lawmakers clashed in the Bundestag on Friday over whether frozen Russian assets should be made fully available to support Ukraine. The AfD warned that such a move could undermine confidence in the euro, while CDU and SPD members stressed the need for long-term financial backing for Kyiv. The Greens’ proposal sought the complete transfer of Russian funds—going beyond the EU’s current plan—raising legal concerns under international law. The Bundestag ultimately rejected the motion, voting 455–77 to dismiss it. Meanwhile, Belgium continues to oppose the EU’s proposed €140 billion “reparations loan” for Ukraine, arguing that using frozen assets could jeopardise future peace efforts. EU nations remain split over the legal and economic risks of tapping Moscow’s funds, as Russia condemns the plan as unlawful.
