Mexico’s Popocatépetl volcano erupted on Friday, sending an intense plume of ash, gas and water vapour around 3.5 kilometres above the crater, authorities said. The volcano is located about 43 kilometres from the city of Puebla and remains under close monitoring due to its proximity to densely populated areas.
According to Mexico’s National Centre for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred), Popocatépetl recorded 35 exhalations over the previous 24 hours. The Volcanic Alert Traffic Light remains at Yellow Phase 2, indicating low to moderate explosive activity.
