Russia has successfully test-fired the Zircon hypersonic cruise missile at a range of over 1,000 km (625 miles). The Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the missile had been fired from Admiral Gorshkov's frigate in the Barents Sea and hit a target in the White Sea. The new test comes amid Russia's offensive against Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the Zircon as part of a new and unrivalled generation of arms systems, which include advanced missiles and laser weapons. Russia has conducted previous test-launches of the Zircon from warships and submarines in the past year. The test also comes a month after Moscow test-launched a nuclear-capable intercontinental missile - Sarmat - capable of carrying over 10 warheads as far as the United States.
