Taiwan’s Hai Kun submarine has completed a torpedo-firing exercise during its ongoing sea trials, marking a major step toward developing its underwater combat capability. The exercise reportedly tested fire-control calculations, launch procedures and torpedo guidance, moving the submarine beyond basic propulsion testing. Taiwan is also expected to equip the Hai Kun with U.S.-made Mk 48 Mod 6 heavyweight torpedoes, giving it a powerful anti-ship and anti-submarine weapon. The combination could strengthen Taipei’s ability to threaten Chinese naval forces during a potential blockade or invasion.
