Jason Arday, Cambridge’s youngest-ever Black professor, has died aged 41. Police said his death was unexpected but not suspicious.
Jason Arday, British academic and Cambridge University's youngest-ever black professor, who recently resigned over a plagiarism row, has passed away. Police found the 41-year-old unresponsive at his home in London's Battersea.
The London Metropolitan Police have not yet announced a cause of death. According to The Independent, the death is being treated as "unexpected" but "not suspicious." However, coming as it did less than two weeks after his August 5 resignation, the death is raising questions.
In 2023, Arday became the youngest ever Black professor when he joined the university as a professor of sociology of education at the age of 38. But the tenure was tainted by media allegations of plagiarism in his PhD thesis, and a host of other allegations.
Arday admitted that there were “errors” in his work but denied the plagiarism allegations. Liverpool John Moores University, where he conducted his doctoral research, cleared him of wrongdoings However, his previous appointments at Durham and Glasgow were questioned, and both universities started reexamining his credentials.
In the open resignation letter he wrote, Ardy stated that there are limits to what a person can be made to endure.

What Happened To Jason Ardy? What We Know So Far
The London Metropolitan Police have released limited details about the death. A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police did not clarify if the "unexpected" death would warrant an autopsy.
"Sadly, a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers," the spokesperson said. "At this time his death is being treated as unexpected but is not believed to be suspicious."
Professor Deborah Prentice, Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor, said the university is "desperately saddened to hear this tragic news" she said. "Our heartfelt sympathies go to Jason Arday's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time, she added.

What Jason Arday Wrote In His Resignation Letter
In his public resignation on August 5, Wednesday, 41-year-old Arday said that what he experienced has "gone far beyond scholarly disagreement." He said that his resignation should be seen as "an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me".
"While criticism is an inevitable part of academic life, what I have experienced has gone far beyond scholarly disagreement," he wrote. "The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love."
