Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hits China’s Xinjiang region; no casualties reported
An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit China’s Xinjiang region on Thursday.
An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 hit China’s Xinjiang, a region in the country’s northwest that shares a border with Kyrgyzstan, the China Earthquake Networks Centre (CENC) said on Thursday.
The earthquake struck near the county of Akqi near the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border at 3:44 pm local time (0744 GMT), with the epicentre at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), according to CENC.

In a separate news, an earthquake of magnitude 4.1 was recorded in Afghanistan in the early hours of Thursday, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The agency confirmed the tremor on X, noting that it struck at a depth of 140 kilometres. The post included the coordinates and timing of the quake, reporting: “Magnitude 4.1, 04/12/2025, 03:05:19 IST, Latitude 36.54 N, Longitude 71.66 E, Depth 140 km, Location: Afghanistan.”

This latest quake follows another tremor of magnitude 4.4 that hit the country earlier in the week. Afghanistan frequently experiences seismic activity due to its location in the Hindu Kush region, an area known for powerful and recurring earthquakes.
The Red Cross has highlighted that the mountainous region is one of the most geologically active parts of the world, resulting in several earthquakes each year. On 4 November, northern Afghanistan witnessed a destructive 6.3-magnitude quake near Mazar-i-Sharif, which killed at least 27 people and injured more than 950.
