US Iran war highlights: Businesses working with Iranian airlines risk US sanctions, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday, calling the warning a part of a campaign to put economic pressure on Iran during the US and Israel's war against Tehran. Iran foreign minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday said the US had been “requesting” Tehran for negotiations, adding that America had not achieved “even one of their goals” in their conflict.
“It is clear that Iran has stood up against the world's greatest superpower, and they have not achieved even one of their goals. This is why they have requested negotiations, and we are currently considering it,” Araghchi told Russian media, according to his Telegram channel.
Araghchi is in St Petersburg for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid stalled negotiations with the US after meetings in Pakistan and Oman.
During his meeting with Putin, Araghchi said Iran was a “stable, solid and powerful system”, adding that Russia had stood by Iran. Putin, for his part, assured Araghchi that Moscow would do “everything that serves your interests and the interests of all the peoples of the region” to secure peace in West Asia.
Russian officials confirmed Araghchi's visit on Monday. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the meeting would focus on the escalating war. Iran’s ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, said the foreign minister planned “to hold consultations with the Russian authorities on the current situation in the talks, the ceasefire and developments around the conflict” in the Gulf.
He added that “given bilateral relations between the two countries and the fact that Iran and Russia, as neighbours, see eye-to-eye on a number of regional and international issues, we have seen regular communication at the high and top levels.”
Iran's new deal to the US
Iran has proposed a phased deal to the US, offering to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for ending hostilities. The plan focuses on removing the US naval blockade and restoring oil flows while postponing nuclear negotiations to a later stage, Axios reported.
US-Iran peace talks stagnant
The visits come as Iran and the United States remain at odds over how to resume negotiations. Araghchi said it is unclear whether US President Donald Trump is committed to diplomacy, particularly after Washington cancelled plans to send envoys to Pakistan.
The US has proposed continuing talks by phone, but Iran has declined direct engagement for now. Tensions linked to the Strait of Hormuz remain a key concern, affecting both security and energy flows. Vessel traffic remains sharply lower than pre-war levels, according to MarineTraffic data.
Israel bombs Lebanon amid ceasefire
Then there is the deteriorating situation in Lebanon. A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, already tenuous, has failed to hold after PM Benjamin Netanyahu ordered fresh strikes on Lebanon. Despite a US-brokered extension meant to hold for at least three weeks, Israel has repeatedly bombed the country. Over four people died in fresh strikes, Lebanese media reported.

US Iran news LIVE: Trump not happy with Iran' proposal
US Iran news LIVE: A US official said Monday that President Donald Trump is dissatisfied with an Iranian proposal, as it fails to address Tehran’s nuclear program, according to Reuters.
“He doesn’t love the proposal,” the official said, adding that Trump discussed it earlier with his top national security aides.
The U.S.-Iran standoff continues, with regional energy supplies impacted. Iranian sources said the proposal seeks to defer nuclear talks until the conflict ends and Gulf shipping disputes are resolved, while Washington insists nuclear issues must be addressed upfront.
US Iran news LIVE: Iranian defence official holds talks with Russian, Belarusian ministers
US Iran news LIVE: Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov held talks in Kyrgyzstan on Monday with Iran's Deputy Defence Minister Reza Talaei-Nik, state-run TASS news agency reported.
Belousov reiterated Russia's longstanding position that the Iran war should be resolved exclusively through diplomatic means and said he was confident Moscow and Tehran would continue to support one another.
Talaei-Nik also traveled to Belarus, one of Russia's closest allies, where Belarus' Defence Ministry said he discussed the Middle East situation with Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin.
The ministry, quoted by the state BelTA news agency, said both officials agreed that the sole way to resolve the conflict was "a return to the sphere of a political-diplomatic settlement and the intensification of the process of negotiations."
The ministry statement said the meeting "confirmed the mutual interest of Minsk and Tehran for a further deepening of their joint interaction".
US Iran news LIVE: Israel cancels major holiday gatherings over fears of a Hezbollah attack
US Iran news LIVE: Typically, around 100,000 mostly ultra-Orthodox Jews would gather next week on Mount Meron in northern Israel to celebrate the Lag BaOmer holiday.
However, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the large festival will replaced with a smaller symbolic ceremony, citing concerns about the gathering being attacked by Hezbollah. Similar restrictions were imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic and previous wars.
Mount Meron is only about 4 miles (6 kilometers) from the border with Lebanon. People normally light bonfires, dance and have large meals there in honor Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a 2nd-century sage and mystic who is believed to be buried on the mountain.
Across Israel, even in secular areas, people often celebrate Lag BaOmer with barbecues and bonfires in parks and forests.

US Iran news LIVE: Netanyahu says Hezbollah is down to about 10% of its arsenal
US Iran news LIVE: Meeting with army commanders, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Hezbollah’s ability to fire into Israel has been sharply degraded, estimating the group retains about 10% of its arsenal. He did not clarify whether that figure refers to the Lebanese militant group’s stockpile from before the current war, or since the Gaza war began back in 2023.
Iran-backed Hezbollah is believed to still have tens of thousands of rockets, missiles and drones despite decades of efforts by Israel, U.N. peacekeepers and Lebanon’s government to disarm it. Despite Israeli pressure, it’s unclear whether Lebanese authorities have the capacity or political will to disarm Hezbollah.
Netanyahu said Israeli forces’ occupation of parts of southern Lebanon — which he described as a “security zone” — has made northern Israel safer. He said deals brokered with the U.S. and Lebanon gave Israel a “freedom of action” to counter threats inside that country. Beirut has not acknowledged any such right, and Hezbollah says it will keep firing as long as Israel does.
US Iran news LIVE: French FM says Iran must make 'major concessions' to end crisis
US Iran news LIVE:France said Monday that Iran must be ready to make "major concessions" to end a crisis, as countries piled pressure on Tehran at a UN session on its control of the key Strait of Hormuz.
"There can be no lasting solution to this crisis unless the Iranian regime agrees to major concessions and a radical shift in its stance," Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told the UN Security Council.
Barrot said that Iran must show a way "to peaceful coexistence within its region and for the Iranian people to be able to build freely their own future," months after the cleric-run state ruthlessly repressed mass protests.

US Iran news LIVE: The United States and Iran clashed over Tehran's nuclear programme as a review of the treaty meant to prevent the spread of atomic weapons got underway Monday at the United Nations, a confrontation almost certain to be repeated during the monthlong meeting.
At issue was the election of Iran as one of 34 vice presidents of the conference, where 191 parties to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty are reviewing its implementation as they have done every five years since it took effect in 1970.
Iran was a candidate of what has been dubbed the "nonaligned movement," made up of 121 mainly developing countries.

US Iran news LIVE: Oil prices hit two-week high as Iran talks stall
US Iran news LIVE: Oil prices climbed about 3% to a two-week high on Monday as peace talks between the U.S. and Iran stalled and shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remained limited, keeping global oil supplies tight.
Brent futures rose $2.90, or 2.8%, to settle at $108.23 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose $1.97, or 2.1%, to settle at $96.37.
That put Brent up for a sixth day in a row for the first time since March 2025 and at its highest close since April 7. WTI closed at its highest since April 13.
"Brent blowing out to a double-digit plus premium to WTI ... should attract customers to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and possibly drive U.S. crude oil exports to (a) new all-time record," Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho, said in a note.

US Iran news LIVE: Iran condemns US seizures of Iran-linked tankers
US Iran news LIVE: Iran has condemned US seizures of Iran-linked tankers as “outright legalization of piracy and armed robbery on the high seas.” “Welcome to the return of the pirates — only now, they operate with government-issued warrants, sail under official flags, and call their plunder “law enforcement.” The United States must be held fully accountable for this brazenly lawless behavior, which strikes at the heart of international law & international free trade, and threatens the basic principles of maritime security,” Iran foreign minister Easmaeil Baqaei wrote on X.
US Iran news LIVE: Trump holds talks on Iran with security team
US Iran news LIVE: US President Donald Trump met with his top security advisors Monday to discuss an Iranian proposal that would reportedly re-open the Strait of Hormuz as broader negotiations over the war continue, the White House said.
When asked about the reported plan -- which would see both Iran and the United States lift their blockades ahead of further talks on the thorny issue of Tehran's nuclear program -- spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told a White House briefing that "the proposal was being discussed."
"Only because it's been reported, I will confirm the president has met with his national security team this morning," she said, refusing to say if Trump would accept the proposal.
US Iran news LIVE: Rubio says purported Iranian offer on Hormuz not acceptable
US Iran news LIVE: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says a purported offer from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under strict conditions is not acceptable to the United States or others.
Speaking in a Monday interview with Fox News, Rubio said Iran has a different view of the strategic waterway than most of the rest of the world.
"What they mean by opening the straits is, yes, the straits are open, as long as you coordinate with Iran, get our permission, or we'll blow you up and you pay us," he said.
"That's not opening the straits. Those are international waterways. They cannot normalise, nor can we tolerate them trying to normalise, a system in which the Iranians decide who gets to use the waterways," Rubio said.

US Iran news LIVE: US President Donald Trump seems unlikely to accept Iran's offer to lift Strait of Hormuz restrictions in exchange of US lifting the sanctions on the Islamic Republic, AP reported. The existing ceasefire keeps the US and Iran in a fragile standoff over the strait.

“If the Lebanese government continues to take cover under the wing of the Hezbollah terrorist organisation -- fire will break out and engulf the cedars of Lebanon,” Katz added.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said he would talk to Iranian authorities after his two-day trip to Andorra.
