US-Iran war live updates: The ongoing conflict in the Middle East shows no signs of abating even as it entered the third week, with Iran announcing fresh attacks at US bases in Saudi Arabia and vowing retaliation against the attack at Kharg Island. Fresh attacks were reported at Kuwait airport and the Baghdad airport complex, which houses a military base and a US diplomatic facility.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said they had launched a missile salvo at US forces stationed at a major base in Saudi Arabia's Al-Kharj. Meanwhile, Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said it was involved in "direct clashes" with Israeli forces in the southern Lebanese town of Khiam.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he “hopes” countries affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Strait of Hormuz – including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK – will send warships to the region to help keep the waterway open and safe. Trump added that, in the meantime, the United States would continue bombing the shoreline and targeting Iranian boats, aiming to make the Hormuz Strait “OPEN, SAFE, and FREE.”

Earlier on Friday, he had said that the United States had heavily bombed military targets on Iran's oil hub Kharg Island and the US Navy would soon begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said military targets on Kharg Island, which handles almost all of Iran's crude exports, had been "totally obliterated" in "one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East."

He said he had chosen not to target oil infrastructure on the island for now.

"However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision," the US president said.

However, Iran’s Fars news agency reported that thick smoke has been seen rising from Iran’s Kharg Island, but that Iranian forces continue to operate from there despite Trump’s claims that the US “obliterated” military targets on the island.

Trump on Strait of Hormuz

With oil prices spiking, Donald Trump was asked by reporters when the US Navy would begin escorting tankers through the Gulf's critical Strait of Hormuz.

"It'll happen soon, very soon," he said.

Iranian strikes have all but halted maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas normally pass.

What's happening in Iran?

Several top Iranian officials joined a defiant pro-government rally in Tehran, meanwhile, marching alongside demonstrators waving banners reading "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."

As the United States intensified its bombing of Iran, Tehran launched a new wave of drone and missile attacks on Israel and its Gulf neighbours.

The war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon continued to rage, and the Lebanese health ministry said an Israeli strike on a primary healthcare centre in southern Lebanon had killed at least 12 medical personnel on Friday.

According to the Lebanese authorities, at least 773 people have been killed by Israeli attacks in Lebanon aimed at wiping out Iranian ally Hezbollah.

USS Tripoli, with 2,500 Marines, dispatched

The United States and Israel have treaded carefully around Kharg Island until now, but US officials have reportedly said that capturing the island was now on the table.

The Wall Street Journal and New York Times reported on Friday that the Pentagon had dispatched the Japan-based amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli to the region along with its complement of some 2,500 Marines.

Blasts ring West Asia

Heavy blasts shook Tehran late Friday after the United States vowed to step up air strikes and Iranian state media said a fresh round of missiles had been launched towards Israel. Israeli rescue workers said no casualties were reported.

Blasts were heard in Doha early Saturday, and Qatar's defence ministry said its military had intercepted missiles targeting the Gulf state.

Saudi Arabia's defence ministry said its forces had intercepted dozens of drones on Friday, and Turkey said NATO forces shot down a ballistic missile launched from Iran -- the third such interception in the war.

Oil prices

The conflict has sparked chaos in global markets and sent oil prices soaring.

Brent contracts for a barrel of crude have soared more than 42 per cent, leaving markets and governments everywhere skittish about energy supply and higher inflation. On Friday, oil stayed above $100 a barrel.

US-Iran war live updates: An Iranian lawmaker warned on Saturday that Iran could launch helicopter assaults on US bases in the region and capture American troops if the United States attempts to seize Kharg Island in the northern Persian Gulf.

The warning came after Donald Trump said on Friday that United States Central Command carried out a major bombing raid on Kharg Island, claiming American forces destroyed all military targets on the island while deliberately avoiding oil infrastructure.

Within the span of a few hours on Thursday, Iran’s new supreme leader said he’d keep one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints closed, and its head of national security said the country could plunge the whole Middle East into darkness, and hunt down US troops “running for safety.”

On Friday, senior leaders marched through the streets of Tehran in broad daylight, with thousands of others, for an annual pro-Palestinian event that state media portrayed as also being a pro-government rally.

It was a show of defiance toward the US and Israel, which have vowed to kill more Iranian officials after assassinating Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the opening strikes of the war. Those walking about, some of them taking selfies with Iranians, included President Masoud Pezeshkian, Ali Larijani, who is head of the Supreme National Security Council, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. State media said one woman was killed when an airstrike landed close by.

US-Iran war live updates: Why did the US not target oil infrastructure at the Kharg Island?

Iran, which ramped up oil output in the run-up to the war by Israel and the US, has continued to ship oil at a rate of 1.1 million to 1.5 million barrels per day, according to TankerTracker.com and Kpler data.

Markets were watching for any sign that the strikes had damaged Kharg Island's intricate network of pipelines, terminals and storage tanks. Even minor disruptions could further tighten global supply, adding pressure to an already volatile market.

"You take out Kharg infrastructure, then you take 2 million bpd out of the market for good - not until the Straits get fixed," said Dan Pickering, chief investment officer for Pickering Energy Partners.

US-Iran war live updates: US says it can provide 'reliable' energy supply to Asia-Pacific

The United States can provide "reliable" energy supplies to the Asia-Pacific, US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Saturday, as the Middle East war cripples oil and gas flows in the region.

US President Donald Trump's "energy dominance" policy aims to ensure that "we have energy to allow for prosperity at home, and we have the ability to sell energy to our friends and allies," Burgum told an event in Tokyo bringing together 17 countries from the region.

That ensures the region has a "reliable, affordable and secure" energy supply that "can't be interrupted by a terrorist regime," he said.

Oil and gas prices have surged since US-Israeli strikes on Iran killed its supreme leader and plunged the Middle East into war.

The conflict has virtually halted traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a key transit point for oil and gas -- the vast majority of which is destined for Asia.

US-Iran war live updates: How Iran and the US traded threats to oil infrastructure

Iran threatened Saturday to reduce US-linked oil facilities to "a pile of ashes" as the two-week-old Middle East war spilled over into a global oil price crisis.

Iranian armed forces issued the warning after US President Donald Trump said he may decide to "wipe out" Iran's largest oil export hub on its Kharg Island.

Waves of drone, missile and aerial bombing have displaced millions in the region and reportedly killed more than 1,200 people in Iran since the United States and Israel opened hostilities on February 28.

Despite facing superior US and Israeli firepower, Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks against at least 10 countries.

Tehran has also squeezed the global economy by threatening to attack oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, bringing traffic to a virtual halt on a route that normally carries one-fifth of global oil supplies.

Crude oil prices have surged more than 40 per cent since the war began.

Trump said Friday US forces had "totally obliterated" all military targets on Iran's Kharg Island oil export hub, describing it in a social media post as "one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East."

The US leader said he had chosen not to "wipe out" oil infrastructure on the Iranian island, for now.

"However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision," he said.

Regarding the future of the military engagement, the Speaker maintained a firm position, declaring that "the war will continue until the enemy's calculus is altered and they are driven to regret."

US-Iran war live updates: What is happening in Qatar?

Qatar said on Saturday it intercepted two missiles, after blasts were heard in the capital Doha and authorities said they had evacuated some key areas.

Interceptors were seen downing two projectiles over the Qatari capital's downtown area, and blasts were heard, according to AFP journalists, as Iran presses on with its retaliatory air campaign against Gulf states.

The country's defence ministry said in two separate posts on Saturday that its military had "intercepted" a missile attack targeting the country.

Earlier, the interior ministry said in a statement it was "evacuating several key areas as a temporary precautionary measure, within the framework of ensuring public safety until the danger has passed".

In Doha's central Musheireb district, some residents received phone alerts telling them to "evacuate the area immediately... to the nearest safest place as a temporary precaution".

Scores of residents and some hotel guests in Musheireb rushed into underground car parks for shelter, AFP reported.

Law enforcement was out on the streets, and some areas of Musheireb were cordoned off, which hosts a country office for US tech giant Google and the US payments firm American Express.

Musheireb also hosts some Qatari government offices.
