Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen was found dead in her home Wednesday, April 1. Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is now in police custody, authorities said.

Nancy’s family confirmed her death in an Instagram post shared on Nancy’s profile.

Stephen was ‌booked ⁠into the Broward County jail in Fort Lauderdale, officials said, according to Reuters. Police Chief Brad Mock said that no more suspects were being sought.

Here are five things to know about Nancy after her death:

Police found the South Florida city leader at around 10 am on Wednesday after they began an investigation into her "well-being," according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Police Chief Brad Mock said that the case was being investigated as a "domestic violence incident."
Nancy, who was first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020, was re-elected in 2024. Last November, she was appointed by the commission to serve a second, one-year term as vice mayor, according to her bio on the city’s website.
Before her election to the commission, Nancy worked as an environmental scientist who formerly served on the Broward County Soil and Water Conservation District, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
Nancy, 38, was the first Black woman elected to the Coral Springs Commission in 2020, according to Florida Politics. Later, former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris tapped Nancy to serve as Florida's Caribbean Vote Director during the 2024 presidential election.
Nancy’s brother, Donovan Joshua Leigh Metayer, a survivor of the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018, died by suicide last year. Nancy previously shared in a Facebook post that her brother died by suicide on December 15, 2025, “after a seven-year battle with schizophrenia.”
