A school principal in China’s Guizhou province stopped a student from jumping off a 17-storey building as she stood at the edge of the roof, a video showed.

The girl earlier told firefighters to back off as they responded to an emergency call.

Shanghaiist reported that the girl was “severely depressed”.

In a similar incident in Taiwan recently, a schoolgirl jumped to her death before police officials could rescue her.

High suicide rates among the youth in China are blamed on pressure to perform well at school in a country where the education system places great emphasis on grades.
