A regional ministry spokeswoman said that two rescue helicopters were deployed to a building situated just outside the town of El Gordo, 175 kilometers (110 miles) west of Madrid, and a wounded person was flown to Getafe hospital in the capital.

The cause of the explosion on Sunday was not known and several other people may have been slightly injured, the spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity in keeping with ministry rules.

State broadcaster TVE said that the facility was used by the defense ministry to decommission cluster bombs, adding that firefighters had been sent to the scene.
