A spokesperson with the railway department of Hohhot, the regional capital, confirmed the death toll and revised number of the injured to three, while earlier report said was one.

The accident happened yesterday when a train carrying stones, which were used to pave the railroad, derailed at the construction site.

The new 85-km line is to link Inner Mongolia's Baotou to Mandalt, a border town near neighbouring Mongolia.

The three injured people have been hospitalised, Xinhua reported.
