Twenty-two people were killed and 10 others injured in an explosion in firecracker blast in China.

Twenty-two people were killed and 10 others injured in an explosion when firecrackers were being destroyed in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur region, local officials said.

The authorities of Turpan were trying to dispose the firecrackers in a desert region about eight kilometers from the city toll gate, Xinhua news agency said quoting officials.

The injured have been hospitalised, it said, adding, investigations were on. It gave no other details.
