6.1 magnitude quake in Costa Rica: seismologists

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck Costa Rica in an area 74 kilometers southwest of the capital San Jose, seismologists said.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake has struck Costa Rica in an area 74 kilometers southwest of the capital San Jose, seismologists said.

There were no immediate reports of damage. But radio and television stations in San Jose said the quake was felt throughout the country, sowing fear in the population.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was registered at 9:26 pm (0326 GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 29 kilometers.
