Comoros-born Fazul Abdullah Mohammed and one of his accomplices were gunned down at a checkpost in Mogadishu on Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

Fazul Mohammed was the head of the al Qaeda network in East Africa.

Kenyan police chief Mathew Iteere told a local TV channel that the Somali transitional government has confirmed Mohammed's death.

The high-ranking Al Qaeda leader operated from Somalia and planned the terror attacks against the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in
1998.

Hundreds of people had died in the bombings.

The US had offered a reward of $5 million for information leading to his capture.
