The soldier, who was not identified by name, was from the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment.

The ministry said yesterday it could not immediately provide any further details on the attack, which took place in volatile Helmand province.

Fifty-six British military personnel have died in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion to oust the Taliban in November 2001, according to Defence Ministry figures.
