The bombing, which occurred at around 6:30 pm (0200 GMT), also injured 57 others, he said.

The incident happened at a police checkpoint when six to seven police vehicles had gathered and many policemen were sitting and chatting there, Manas said, adding an investigation has been ordered.

Helmand has been a hotbed of Taliban militants, who attack government targets and foreign troops frequently.

Over 4,400 persons, most of them Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
