China on Wednesday executed a former top police and justice official at the centre of a huge graft and organised crime scandal that riveted the nation, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Wen Qiang, 54, the former head of the judiciary in the south western Chongqing region and also an ex-deputy police chief, was sentenced to death in April for charges including rape and taking bribes to protect criminal gangs.

His conviction brought to a climax a crime crackdown that lifted the lid on the seamy underworld in the mega-city of more than 30 million people and has resulted in more than 3,300 detentions and hundreds of prosecutions.
