The billionaire was annoyed when a singer named Storm Lee entered as a contestant on his British TV show The X Factor last month and Cowell refused to call the participant by his first name, reports imdb.com.

Surprised at this, Cowell's co-judge Cheryl Cole insisted that if he changed his name to "Lightning", his fellow judges would refer to him as that.

However, Cowell thought it would sound ridiculous but he was ambushed by presenter Konnie Huq during a live broadcast of spin-off show The Xtra Factor as she presented him with documents to legally change his name.

He agreed to sign the papers in the game's spirit, officially becoming Lightning Cowell but reverted to Simon after 24 hours.

As Huq handed him the documents to sign, Cowell said: "Is this official? Are you serious about this? Can I hold the contract? Okay, for 24 hours then."
