"The metal gave way and the workers on it (the bridge) fell. The metal also hit some workers below them," chief inspector Arnel Dial, police chief of Subic town told AFP.

Five people were killed in the accident, he added.

The accident occurred at the Keppel Subic Shipyard as the workers were repairing a cargo ship, provincial police chief, senior superintendent Francisco Santiago, and a company official said.

Santiago said eight other workers were being treated at a local hospital for "severe" injuries.

Both Santiago and the company's human resources manager, Luz Loverita, said the case was being treated as an accident.

"It was an accident. Nobody wants an accident to happen," Loverita told AFP, adding that company officials were notifying the next of kin of the dead.
