A leading Iraqi imam, waving a Kalashnikov assault rifle as he led Muslim weekly prayers here on Friday, called on Arabs and Muslims worldwide to kill Americans in protest against the war.

"Arabs, Muslims! Surround the Americans and kill them everywhere you see them!" said Sheikh Abdelatif Homeim at Baghdad's Umm al-Maarek (Mother of All Battles) mosque, named after the 1991 Gulf War.

He branded the US-led war launched on Thursday to topple president Saddam Hussein "a barbarous aggression on Iraq by one of the most powerful nations in the world".
