Japanese scientist, US duo win Nobel Prize for Chemistry

Osamu Shimomura of Japan and Americans Martin Chalfie and Roger Y Tsien won the Nobel Chemistry Prize on Wednesday for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein (GFP), the Nobel jury said.

Osamu Shimomura of Japan and Americans Martin Chalfie and Roger Y Tsien won the Nobel Chemistry Prize on Wednesday for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein (GFP), the Nobel jury said.

"This protein has become one of the most important tools used in contemporary bioscience," the jury said.

"With the aid of GFP, researchers have developed ways to watch processes that were previously invisible, such as the development of nerve cells in the brain or how cancer cells spread," it said.
