Lankan jets bomb LTTE positions

Sri Lankan war planes bombed suspected Tamil Tiger positions in the island's east on Tuesday after the rebels attacked two military helicopters and wounded three diplomats.

Air force aircraft attacked the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) positions in Thoppigala, about 50 kms southwest of Batticaloa town



The rebels admitted they attacked the landing points of the military aircraft which carried six ambassadors and several other UN officials.



Meanwhile, the Tigers said the military had entered into an area held by them in the north-western district of Mannar and carried out a bomb attack that killed a school teacher and wounded another.



"This is the work of the Sri Lankan security forces," LTTE spokeswoman N. Selvy said from the political base of Kilinochchi in the island's north.
