"We are getting ready for a long, glorious war," Gaddafi said in an audio message broadcast on state television.

"We will defeat you. We are fighting on our land, defending our honour," he said, describing Western nations as "monsters and criminals".

"You will fall just like Hitler fell," he warned. "All tyrants fall."
