'LTTE network still active'

The international network of the defeated LTTE is still active looking for opportunities to revive the terror group, Sri Lankan Prime Minister D M Jayaratne has said.

Jayaratne was speaking at the motion to extend the state of emergency by a further month.

"The international network is active and is trying to revive the group", Jayaratne told the Lankan parliament.

He said certain elements who want to challenge the island's sovereignty and territorial integrity were also backing the efforts to revive the group Jayaratne said some of the rehabilitated and released former members of the outfit have been re-arrested on suspicion of action to revive the group locally.

Over 6,000 of them had been rehabilitated and re-integrated into the society, Jayaratne said.

In March a considerable number of former LTTE members had been nabbed from the Northminister, he said.

He said the emergency laws are thus required to tackle and critical security situations threatening the island's security.
