A training base of the sea wing of the LTTE at Puthukudiiruppu was bombed by Sri Lankan Air Force Kfir bombers at around 8.00 am, air force spokesman Group Captain Ajantha Silva said.

The training base was located on the Puthukudiiruppu-Paranthan road in the northern district of Mullaithivu, Silva said.

Clashes between LTTE rebels and the government troops have been regular in the north since July when the government claimed that the rebels had been completely evicted from the country's eastern province.

The LTTE seeks to set up a separate administration in the combined north and east provinces for the Tamil minority in order to realise their political aspirations.

They claim the Sinhala majority governments since 1948 had discriminated against the Tamils.

More than 70,000 people have died in the over-three-decades-old conflict.
