Tremors were felt in the northwestern city of Mansehra and the capital Islamabad at 8:55 am (0255 GMT), seismological department official Mohammad Akram told AFP.
The earthquake's epicentre was located about 440 kilometres (273 miles) north of Peshawar in the mountains of Tajikistan, he said.
A devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake in northwest Pakistan and Kashmir killed some 74,000 people and displaced 3.5 million in October 2005.
