Moderate quake hits off Japan

A moderate 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off southern Japan on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami alert was issued.

A moderate 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off southern Japan on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami alert was issued.

The quake hit at 22:17 (13:17 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.25 miles) under the Pacific Ocean and about 120 kilometres southwest of Ishigaki-jima, in the Ryuku islands, the USGS said.

Around 20 per cent of the world’s most powerful earthquakes strike Japan.
