"The preliminary theory is that the terrorist attacks were carried out by terror groups linked to the North Caucasus. We consider this the main theory," FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov said, quoted by Russian news agencies.

He added that the female suicide bombers who carried out the blasts were believed to be from the North Caucasus, a largely Muslim part of Russia that has been wracked by a violent insurgency in recent years.
