Nepal police detain 80 Tibetans on China's 60th anniversary

Nepalese riot police on Thursday detained some 80 Tibetan exiles from different places, including the Chinese Consulate's Office in Kathmandu, in a bid to foil anti-China demonstrations as China is marking the 60th anniversary of Communist rule.

Half of them were detained when they were protesting near the Chinese Embassy's Visa Section at Hattisar in the capital while others were detained from other places as preventive measure, the police said.

The protesters shouted anti-China and pro-Free Tibet slogans like "We want Free Tibet," and "Restore human rights in Tibet" during the demonstration.

A police official said that the authorities were interrogating the detained Tibetans and they will be released soon after carrying out necessary investigation.

The police also carried out security checks of public vehicles.

Nepal government, which reiterates 'One China' Policy, has assured China that it will not allow any activity directed against the communist nation from its soil.

The Tibetans started arriving in Nepal seeking asylum since Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959.

There are currently more than 20,000 Tibetans residing in Nepal.
