The defence secretary says Obama is somewhat more analytical and wants to hear from everyone in the room on an issue — and will call on people who don’t speak up.

Gates says Bush was interested in different points of view, but didn’t go out of his way to get them.

Gates says it’s Obama’s call on how long he stays as Pentagon chief. Gates does says “it would be a challenge” to stay on for Obama's entire term.

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, the US defence secretary touted “significant military success” in Iraq, and stressed he did not expect changes to US military drawdown plans there.
