Charles, who penned other hits such as Walking to New Orleans passed away at his home in Abbeville, Louisiana, Thursday and the cause of his death remains unknown, reports contactmusic.com. He is survived by four sons.

"We were very close for 40-50 years. We started writing stuff together in the 1970s. He was very easy to work with and a special guy," said his long-time friend and music collaborator John.

Charles and John had just finished an album titled Timeless together. It will be released next month.

Charles had a "spiritual" approach to his music, said his manager Jim Bateman.

"He always said he didn't write songs, they came through him. I wouldn't necessarily call it religious, but spiritual," said Bateman.
