A strong earthquake struck Indonesia’s Sumba island, more than 340 km (210) miles east of Bali, on Monday but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, an official said.

The quake “felt like a truck was passing” and authorities were making further checks on whether there had been any damage in the remote area, the official said.

The quake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was 95 km (60 miles) southeast of Raba in Sumbawa and 270 km west of Ende in Flores, the US Geological Survey said in an updated release on its web site. Its epicentre was at a depth of 87 km.

Sumba, with a population of 611,400 in 2005, is in East Nusa Tenggara province in central Indonesia.
