Strong quake registered in South Atlantic

The magnitude 7.3 quake took place 10 kilometres under water, deep enough to trigger a tsunami.

An earthquakeof magnitude 7.3 was registered off the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean early morning onMonday, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake, which took place 10kilometres underthe water, wasregisteredsome 345 kilometres southeast of Bristol Island in the South Sandwich Islands, a UK territory east of Argentina.

Underwater quakes at low depths are known tocause tsunamis.
